April Ross
April Ross has won more than one medal at the Olympics. She is one of only a handful of female players of beach volleyball to have achieved this feat. Alix-Klineman will compete with April Ross Tokyo in order to claim her third gold medal over the next few days. Ross is also hoping to win her very first Olympic gold. In fact, at 39 this may be her last chance to do so. However, she's confident that top honors are firmly in reach. Ross was mentioned in NBC Boston as saying that If you put in your top, even if you do well, we'll get the gold. In addition, I'm planning be relying on a little bit of good luck. Ross was born in the city of Costa Mesa, California in the year 1982. Her parents as well as her sister lived in the area. Ross was a competitive athlete in a variety of sports during her time at Newport Harbor High School. The prep sports she played included indoor volleyball as well as basketball, track and running. However, she was a standout during this game. According to her bio, during high school she was a volleyball player as an outside setter (middle blocker) as well as a setter (outside blocker). In recognition of her work she was awarded the 1999 Gatorade Champion of Champions Circle of Champions Player of the Year. She also was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the of the year for volleyball. Ross is currently working with Klineman from 2017 but her beach game had been established long before this. It's true that she has had the chance to win numerous events, one of which was with an iconic volleyball player. She teamed up together with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and was also Klineman's trainer. Kessy as well as Ross proved to be an impressive force on the world circuit, winning a 2009 world title together. At the 2012 Olympic Games, they won a gold medal. They were beaten out for the gold medal by the legendary team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Jennings took over for May-Treanor after she retired. The duo went on to earn the beach volleyball bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross began her collegiate time with the Trojans at USC in high school. The Trojans were a few years away from when Ross hit the sand and turned professional. Her time at USC was quite impressive. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she fought her way to Pac-10 and NCAA Freshman of the Year honors and was also an All-American. Her performance also assisted in helping the Trojans get to into the Final Four. She suffered a devastating personal loss in her sophomore year and yet she went on to repeat her place as an All-American. Over her final two years as a player, she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain winning successive national titles. She was a great player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female volleyball player at the college level. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross didn't get to see Ross achieve beach volleyball's top level. In 2001 when Ross was in her sophomore year at USC her mother died of breast cancer. But she still keeps her parent close to the heart. Margie at the beach as well as in everyday life, is still a source of inspiration for her.
